Ask what is included in the hardware list, programming, commissioning, documentation, integration, testing and handover. Ask whether the proposed system can be expanded and who can service it later.

Also ask for a room-by-room functional description. Instead of simply saying ’smart lighting’, the proposal should explain which circuits are dimmed, which scenes are included, how manual control works and what happens if a sensor or network device is unavailable.

Finally, compare solutions by outcomes and architecture, not only by the number of devices.

For new homes, the ideal time is during architectural, electrical and interior coordination. For renovations, planning should happen before walls, ceilings and joinery are closed.

Early planning allows the automation designer to coordinate with the electrical contractor, lighting designer, HVAC consultant, curtain supplier, security team and interior designer. This is how technology becomes invisible rather than looking like an addition.
